There was this mosquito. I called him Bert. He was sitting there on my right arm one arm leaning against a hair and his sharp little nose dug deep into my skin drinking my blood. I suppose I should have swatted him but I knew that if I tried that he's simply fly off and be whining around my ear all night keeping me up. At least if he finished drinking my blood right here right now he could go away and get some sleep.

The phone rang and Bert, sensing my movement, disappeared. I picked it up and it was one of the apartment's junkie whores.

"Hellooo... I see you in the lift yesterday. Can I come to your room ?"

"Sorry. I've got a lot on tomorrow. I need to get some sleep."

"Is okay. I come sleep with you. I very tired."

"No. Sorry."

"I lonely. I not want to sleep alone every night. I know you stay alone. I come stay with you now okay ?"

"No. Not okay. I'm very busy."

"But you say you want go to sleep."

"Yeah. But I want go to sleep with my friend Bert."

The phone went dead.

I took a slow shower enjoying the tepid water while singing the theme tune from Bonanza. I knew there was a cockroach lurking about in my apartment somewhere and I should have gone on a search and destroy mission but it had been a long day and I just wanted to hit the sack and sleep. If cockroaches or mosquitoes or any other wildlife wanted to crawl over me in the dead of night they were welcome just as long as they didn't wake me up.

I hit the sack and then it came.... Knock knock knock. "Hellooo ?"

The same woman as the woman on the phone. I kind of remembered her. I kind of remembered what she looked like. In the bar she probably looked great. She had a slim figure and a face that with a bit of make up might have looked beautiful. But in the morning, in the lift, she looked like the junkie she was. She'd said something about how lonely she sometimes got and how she'd like to come and talk to me. I didn't tell her not to. I kind of thought that she might make a useful cunt in a glass case. Break in case of emergency. But she wasn't someone I really wanted in my life. As I got out the lift she did look to see what door I went to. That's how she knew which room to phone.

The door opened and I cursed my habit of never locking it. I pulled the thin sheet over me as she walked in. She was wearing an a pale blue nylon dressing gown that reached her ankles. "I like your room." She said. "Is much better than my room."

"You don't say."

"Where your friend ?"

"He had to fly but I'm sure he'll be back any second."

"I can talk with you til him come back."

"Yeah... Well... The thing is... I'm kind of sleepy." I yawned as if to emphasise just how sleepy I was.

"Me too. But I don't like sleep alone. Sleep alone is no good."

"Normally I'd agree but..."

But there was no point in saying but. She slipped out of her dresssing gown and slipped nakedly into bed beside me.

"What are you doing ?" I asked.

"I come to bed. Sleep with you."

"No you don't."

"Yes I do." And she laughed. And it was a sweet wilful little laugh.

"I don't have any money."

"Is okay." And she lay her sweet junkie head on my chest and went to sleep. I didn't sleep myself. I had a naked woman lying on me and it had been at least forty eight hours. But then I didn't want to do anything because... Well... Because of AIDS and because of that thing where you fuck a Thai woman without paying them straight away and they think you now belong to them. So I lay there passively while she drifting into a deep deep sleep dribbling a small blob of saliva on to my chest as she was off in dreamland.

And I noticed that Bert the mosquito had found a new friend.

Okay, I hate that glass case line, and I hate this one: "that thing where you **** a Thai woman without paying them..." For the umpteenth time, you guys, the terms "Thai woman" and "whore" are not synonyms. There are millions of Thai women who do not sell sex. Lumping all Thai women together into one insult is not only stupid, it's lazy.

But I like the rest of this very much.

You'll have to check me on this, but it's my understanding that only female mosquitoes bite, and usually only those gestating.

Most mossies live and die without ever having tasted blood.

"Lumping all Thai women together into one insult is not only stupid, it's lazy."

Point taken and politically correct points to you but the author's words might have fit the story. I doubt if what he wrote was intended to be a scholarly work or a documentary. In my opinion, your criticism here may be not quite supportable. Putting a moral lens over your eyes before you read may be a mistake. I have had many readers take offense at something I have written--I sometimes have to remind them that it is writing.

But in your eagerness to state the obvious, you got lazy and missed what you are so eager to pursue so much of the time. It should read: ...a Thai woman without paying her...

Shallow story, poorly written. Needs some serious work, but there's little here, and certainly no sympathy for the narrator who is worse than a junkie whore, thinking trash thoughts, describing this woman as a "useful **** in a glass case." Which is also nonsensical. An attempt at being clever that simply does not work, to say nothing of being rather demeaning and stupid.

If you read Portuguese and French sailing logs from the first Western contact with Thai people you will discover that prostitution was accepted as a way to pay bills in Thailand for people of all social statuses hundreds of years ago. This year in particular with the floods many Thai women who would have never considered working as a hooker are now doing so while their factories are dried out and re built.

I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of Thai women know someone who is in the bright lights business even if they have never had any contact with the game themselves. This has become very obvious in this post flood atmosphere when hundreds of middle aged conservatively dressed women are showing up in the bars for the tourist season this year.

Ayuthaiya is not Iowa. Thousands of women were put out of work in Ayuthaiya a few months ago now they are picking up some spare cash in the bright lights industry. Suzy Creamcheese in the US would probably not have had the same response to a flooding disaster. Perhaps this is the reason that men in Thailand smile more than men in the US.
Steve Rosse

"Ayuthaiya is not Iowa." Right, because Iowa has an "i" in it and Ayutthaya does not.

Okay. I'm not in Thailand so I can't claim first-hand knowledge of whether middle-aged conservatively dressed women are showing up in the bars. I would bet money that they're not, simply because it sounds so much like an old man's fantasy, but as you say I'm not there to see for myself.

But this site has lots of contributors who are currently in the Kingdom. What about it, guys? You seeing lots of hi-so women in the bars these days? Anybody out there gonna back up Mr. Twain on this?

"It should read: ...a Thai woman without paying her..." But this line is part of the narrator's internal monologue, and he's not an erudite guy, so the bad grammar is acceptable.

This story, like all this author's work, is racist and sexist and, probably, homophobic. If he lived in the UK Turk Fist would be one of those sad old gits you see in dingy pubs staring at their reflections and not talking to anyone except to order another luke warm beer. In Bangkok he is, instead, a parasitic junky; one who can't see the beauty of Thai culture or appreciate the social upheavals and political unrest surrounding him as he goes out looking for just one more meaningless hit.

Turk Fist's head is firmly in the gutter that he's first pissed and then passed out in and he seems to want to drag us into that gutter with him. His careless phrasing and poor grammar only serves to strengthen our impression of him as a pathetic junky bathing in his own solipsism and self pity.

Airmail, Sweeping generalisations. Well lets try some others on for size, "Siamese women are excessively lewd" 1624.

Sometimes I feel like a history teacher. In the 1600's if you owed a large debt in the capital of Thailand your wife went to work for a while at the local brothel and hoped to land a Farang from a French or Portuguese or Dutch ship.

Thailand has a long history of trading sex for money and their own brand of prostitution, the GFE experience which by documented sources is at least 400 years old. The ladies and the johns even had rights spelled out under Thai law for the temporary liaisons.
From “The Nation”
In the 17th century, Christoph Carl Fernberger von Egenberg, for example, described Siamese women as "excessively lewd". "They are always approaching the men and urging them to go with them into their houses and have sex with them," he wrote in his diary.

Siamese women in the 17th century are also mentioned in the diary of French ambassador Simon de La Loubre, who arrived in Ayutthaya some 30 years after Fernberger. The ambassador writes in his memoirs about a brothel in the capital of Ayutthaya, which was home to some 600 women from different levels of society, including the daughters and wives of the court's noblemen (it's nice to see old fashioned values don't change).

The Dutch merchant Van Neck, who arrived in Pattani in the early 1600s, describes the women at the harbour and their services.
"When foreigners come from other lands to do their business men come and ask them whether they desire a woman. The young women and girls also come and present themselves, from whom they may choose the one most agreeable to them, provided they agree what he shall pay for certain months. Once they agree about the money (which does not amount to much for so great a convenience), she comes to his house, and serves him by day as his maidservant and by night as his wedded wife." Thailand never was much like the West. To those who think the only difference is the spelling I would suggest a look at Thai history.

You're history question of the day is, "how many years ago did the ruler of Thailand tell Thai women to stop going topless all day long?"

"Nowhere did I say hi so women were turning up at bars because of the floods." Mike, this is why we need an index on this site that list's contributor's posted comments. I am absolutely certain that, back when the floods were first hitting Bangkok, this correspondent (there seems to be some confusion about which of his names we are to use) said he was seeing expensive automobiles outside of the brothels in Pattaya because of the exodus of Hi-So women from the capital. Did I halluncinate that post? Or has he "forgotten" posting it?

Att. MT! You seem well read on Thai history . Then you extrapolate these old facts into modern Thai society.
We move on and the only constant is change. Just because prostitution is still common in Thailand you can't suggest that most Thai women are prospective hookers. Not even low paid factory workers. Where is your logic? If a factory worker wanted to earn more money they could enter the "bright lights" without the floods. They're factory workers because they don't want to sell their body. These women during the floods would go home to the village to wait out the floods and wouldn't starve to death.
I think your attitude to Thai women is attrocious.
Btw. If Thais would think that ALL farangs are mongers it'd be just as bad as your stance.
Think before you opine.

@ Louis P.
"Most mossies live and die without ever having tasted blood."

Are you talking about human blood? That could be a true statement if you are talking about human blood. But without blood mossies cannot breed, any blood, or possibly any 'mammal' blood. Of that I am not 100% sure if they can use reptile blood as well. But mossies live on in the deep woods without a human in sight. They take blood from the many animals they find: deer, raccoon, bear, squirrel, birds, etc. Male mosquitoes do not need blood to survive. It is only the females that need it to fertilize their eggs. Males feed off plant nectar, as do females. Blood is not their food.

@Steve: "Mike, this is why we need an index on this site that list's contributor's posted comments."

Just for ****s and giggles I went back on some of the past weeks comments by MT. I can do that as I can see a list by name of every comment made on here since the site's inception. Nowhere does he, MT, say anything about 'hi-so' women going to work the bars. All I see him as saying on the subject is 'hundreds of middle age CONSERVATIVE Thai women showing up to work in the bars due to the floods'. I am paraphrasing, but that is close enough. There's nothing I can see about 'hi-so' women at all. You are welcome to troll the comments yourself if you have the time to do so. But it won't be easy. And no, I don't believe this is a function we would need, as not many would likely use it, and I doubt the software would support the function.

Airmail, I give you current observations. I give you historical facts.

Let me share with you a little of my life in Thailand. I have a permanent squeeze, she is an engineer. She works 6 days a week. A car picks her up every morning at 6:30 and drops her off at 6:00 PM. That leaves me on my own all day long 6 days a week. I have eaten lunch at least 3 days a week for the past three years in a brothel that serves good Western food. I know all the ladies who work there intimately.

On my way to lunch I walk down a street which has 20 brothels both Thai and Farang and I know a couple of hundred women who work in said brothels. I have taken this walk at least three times a week for the last three years.

I know most of the brothel owners who are both Thai and Farang. I don't have a Mia noi but I have a few girlfriends, some are working girls and some are involved in other occupations. My last Western wife told me I needed a hobby. I have found one. It is Thai women. She was right I feel much better now that I have a hobby.

You are correct a lot of the women during the floods went home. A couple even came to my home. They had some cash in the bank and treated the floods as a vacation. Some others work in the factory to support families and children and this support is in the form of cash.
The ladies could not take two months off from supplying cash for the kids and families.

My point was and is that prostitution in Thailand does not carry the same stigma as in the West because of Thai culture, Thai tradition and Thai economics. As long as the lady is discreet everything is cool. Discretion is the key word not morality.

Are all Farangs mongers? I'll tell you true. For most of my life I have been in the hotel business. Nightly I would walk the parking lot to look at the license plates from local cars as opposed to out of town cars (I can sell the room more than once a day). In Thailand I see the curtains drawn around cars at the love hotels. JFK, MLK, DSK all were mongers who am I to cast the first stone. Are all Farang mongers?

Note to Steve, expensive cars do not hi so women make.

I have endeavored to answer your question with experience, facts and historical data. I hope you don't mind.

Airmail
January 6, 2012, 14:40

I don't mind at all,MT. It explains your skewed view of the world.
I don't think there are Farang brothel owners in Thailand. In the strict sense of the word. Beer bars ,GoGo bars don't count. Maybe one exception in Soi7/1.
Mate ,if you're so partial to brothels that you lunch in them 3 times a week, you need to expand your culinary horizons.
Now you're hedging your bets;you're admitting that a lot of factory workers went back to the village.Have I not called you out on it, you'd still be stuck with your previous generalisations.
Ah, one other thing...most hookers in Thailand ,especially those servicing farangs are not discreet. How can they be when they parade with them in public,in hotels, resorts and take them back to the the village? This is another thing where you're barking up the wrong tree. If there's no stigma as you state then why be discreet? I wish you were consistent.
Btw. I don't cast stones on Farang mongers and you don't cast stones on Thai women in general. Deal?
Ps. Maybe if you'd just entertain the idea that all wisdom doesn't reside in you about Thailand ,that others have experiences too which may be different to yours and maybe those experiences are more accross the board than just whorehouses...maybe just maybe you can learn something other the history books and menus in brothels.

Here's MT's comment from Sisterray's essay, "To Stay or To Go," posted on October 29 of last year:

"Not just Bangkok. I live a hundred miles away and Tesco Lotus and every place else is out of water and sanitary napkins. The single ladies had to go someplace and the bars here are filled to capacity with amateurs looking for some part time work. It does seem kind of funny that girls are driving BMW's to work and that is creating a bit of a parking problem. If you are in the mood for hi so ladies at cut rate prices this is the time to come to Thailand."

January 7, 2012, 14:38

Steve you are correct but it was a different comment at a different time. The first weeks of the flooding the hi so's left BKK in droves but when they discovered what parts would not be flooded they returned. Watching the movement for a while I discovered most of the ladies were from factories that would take a couple of months to get back into production.
Mark Twain
January 7, 2012, 15:49

Another name for a brothel is "Short time bar" The Thai ones have microphones and TV's on the first floor and bedrooms upstairs. There has to be hundreds in Pattaya and I think if a go go or beer bar has bedrooms upstairs for short time use it would also fall under the same genre. Yes Farang own many of them all over Thailand. They can own the business but not the land. Most of the English Pubs that I have been into in Thailand also have rooms upstairs and the waitstaff and cashiers are available to go upstairs, hence the food possibilities. I think the ladies who are working and not sitting out front have to be discrete and they are not usually available until after their shift.

Then there is the factory lottery sex thing. It made the Thai newspapers a few months ago. Raffle tickets are sold for a night of pleasure with a particular female employee at a nominal amount 50 baht and a weekly drawing held. The lady clears a substantial amount for one nights work with the winner. Discretion was violated when this practice hit the newspapers.

The most famous brothel owner that I know of was the Frenchman at Club Eden as I think you were referring to but many others exist; the ex sister club owner in Pattaya is in jail now I think. Of course there is the Lolita chain, kind of famous I think. You might want to take a walk down Soi Six in Pattaya or Soi Bukhow or Soi LK Metro and the list goes on and on. Small towns, look for the Christmas lights out front.
mark twain
January 9, 2012, 13:51

I like brothels, always have. I would write a story about them but one never knows if some enterprising person Thai or Farang who does not share my interest might persecute them as they are illegal in Thailand.

I know 20 Farang brothel owners in and around Pattaya. If I know 20 there has to be a couple of hundred because I don't get around that much anymore. A number of them also serve food. The German one has the best all you can eat German buffet in town. I have never seen any Farang women in attendance but it would be no problem. The decor is red like Brothels in San Francisco at the turn of the century. The employees are all from the same village and they rotate in and out at regular intervals. There is also a swimming pool and hotel attached. One German guy and his whore house supports the entire small town and I think that is admirable. The ladies in town tell the family they are waitresses and maids. Waitresses who make 50 thousand baht a month are few and far in between but no one is asking many questions.

The advantage of getting caught in that particular brothel is the food offers another reason for going. The Farang I know that operate the brothels often serve food, English, Continental and so on. The Israeli guy doesn't serve Middle Eastern food and is missing a bet.

Running a brothel isn't easy. As the rules are different for Farangs and Thais. The Farangs contribute to three different police forces. The Farang also can't do anything in the brothel, it's against the law. If the Thai manager or employees get upset the Farang owner is in trouble. I know one in jail and another that got drugged and robbed in his sleep. There are also a variety of other problems with D J's and any male employees.

Airmail I can understand your concern about my culinary horizons but decor is important to a dining experience too. Some people like to look at the ocean or mountains - I like beautiful women stretched out on divans. Sometimes I even cut my own steak and feed myself.

I think eating alone is sad and if I don't dine at brothels I take the ladies with me someplace. Or if I want a specific menu item I take the cooks so they can sample the other food and ask questions about preparation.

Brothel art has also always fascinated me as do prostitutes. I share this obsession with Degas, Cezanne, Manet, and Lautrec to name a few. If any were alive today I imagine they would be drawn to Thailand with it's rich history and current diversity of ladies of ill repute.
