Beer Lao Dark - AKA Beer Lao Dum

As soon as I heard that Beer Lao Dum had arrived in the bars of Bangkok I revised travels plans I had to allow me a day (and night) in the City of Angels so I could try the darker, stronger sister of Beer Lao.

Time was limited so instead of going to my favourite Asian Fish and Chip Shop, Oh My Cod near Khao San Road, I headed to the Big Mango Bar in Nana Plaza and started downing the stuff as quick as I could.

The taste is similar to regular Beer Lao but the body offers a much fuller, darker hit and the brew rocks in at 6.5% - enough to knock me for six after just a few bottles.

The waitress at the bar told me that the beer had been quite popular with regulars and tourists alike.

She also pointed out that farang get drunk much quicker on Beer Lao Dum but that it was okay as this meant that they normally ended up leaving bigger tips.

As I stumbled out I also found myself leaving a larger than normal tip, having enjoyed the beer and the conversation greatly.

On the subject of mixed drinks. I do not think anyone has done a 'Drinks of Bangkok' or 'Drinks of Thailand' book. Someone should do this. I believe this subject is also open to fun fiction ideas.

And now for something tangential:

From the Not All Ideas are Good Ideas Dept. --

Charles H. Baker Jr. who wrote The Gentleman's Companion: Being an Exotic Drink Book or, Around the World With Jigger, Beaker, and Flask included a drink with the following ingredients:

Gin
Sweet Vermouth
Pineapple Syrup
Grenadine
Lemon Juice
Heavy Cream
Egg White

Sure, a great idea: let's combine refined alcohol, sweet sugar syrup, acid, and heavy cream.

Years ago I worked at the Caneel Bay Plantation Resort on St. John in the Virgin Islands. On the way to work early in the morning Alan Johnson and I would cut through the outside bar area where uncleared tables still had drinks on them. Going from table to table picking up a random bunch of ingredients like the above was perfectly possible. We were young. We could take it. I'm surprised we didn't run into Charles Baker Jr. grabbing left over drinks and writing his book.

It's a fine beer, but more of one for enjoying at home than out in the Bars to me, 6.5% means less time ogling pretty girls as my limit is reached much sooner than I would like and time to perambulate home comes around far too quickly. I haven't been able to find any for sale in the shops in Pattaya of late, hoping that will change soon with some alleged trade agreement between Thailand and Laos kicking in.

" . . . 6.5% means less time ogling . . . "

There are beers and then there are beers (this sentence composed without an editor). Most beers have an alcohol content around 5 percent. Get ready:

A German beer, Schorschbrau Eisbock has an alcohol content of 30.86 percent. This instantly brings to mind a lot of 'marching into Poland' jokes but I'll try to behave.

Samual Adams Utopias (27 percent)

Struise Double Black from Belgium (26 percent) -- I've always been interested in Belgium and can not give a single reason why. Maybe this beer is that reason I have been looking for.

Etc. God I miss my youth when I could drink.
