Sorkan drove me back to my hotel. After rolling around in that filthy garbage pile, I needed a good shower. It was eight o’clock by that time and the nightly street party (that rages every night in Pattaya) was just getting rolling. I had arranged to catch up with Sorkan at the Ugly Parrot in an hour. My mind however, was entirely consumed by the new twists and turns of our case. Not to mention, a little in shock from my brush with death.
The glass orbs? The list of gem dealers? The book on gemstones that my would-be murderer didn’t want me to see?
The connection drifted just within my grasp.
“Of course!” I gasped. “They’re smuggling sapphires!”
I opened the door to my room. My heart stopped beating. All my tapes, as well as my telescope and what was left of my camera gear, were gone. All gone!
“Damn it!” I cried. “I should have come back here first! I knew Jerry was on to me, I should have secured the evidence on his case before I struck off chasing murderers!” I threw my cap at the empty space where the tapes had been. “My paycheque depends on nailing Jerry Tonnage. I should have taken care of that first!” I looked forlornly at the painted concrete ceiling, praying for God or Buddha or somebody to help me. I could feel tears well up in my eyes.
He’s going to be on the look out for me. I’ll never get more tape on him now! Damn it, I’m a fool! A damned fool!
“I need a drink.”
