12 July, 1905 - My Room in the Chao Muang’s Palace - about 9 am

With Dau’s help, I survived the night! She moved the teak chest all by herself, and by so doing, prevented anyone from entering the room, at least without making such a noise that I would be alerted to his intentions! She helped me to survive in another sense too. I was still weak from my wound, but her tender nursing helped me through the night. True, her nursing was like nothing our celebrated Florence Nightingale envisaged - but it was, if anything, all the more effective. Once again that prehensile tongue went to work, beginning with kisses that probed my very throat, and continued to the rest of my body. After that, she massaged me with scented oils, and then - another new experience - wriggled around into what she called the ‘hoc-gao’ position. I had a close up view such as I never imagined in my wildest dreams, but best of all was the oral relief she gave to my throbbing member! After that I slept, and with her warm, young body entwined around mine throughout the night, any bad dreams I had were quickly soothed.
When she left me I do not know, but I awoke, as ever, to an empty bed. Where do these girls go in the daytime? Do they have a staff meeting - followed by Kama Sutra training sessions, perhaps? Or could it be... but no - my imagination is running away with me!

12 July, 1905 - about noon

At about 10, Minister Rattamontrii and the doctor visited me. The doctor changed my dressing and seemed pleased with what he saw. Minister Rattamontrii was also pleased, though said he was sorry to tell me that the Chao Muang would not be available for business that day - perhaps tomorrow.

12 July, 1905 - about 1 pm

My mind is made up. I am strong enough to travel - so I will leave now. There is only one pass through the mountains, so I will undoubtedly intercept Van Helsing on the way. As for the contract, my firm will have to send another solicitor. True, I will be throwing away my chance of a partnership - but rather that than my life!

12 July, 1905 - about 1.30 pm

The guards would not let me pass! One said in broken English that it was on the Chao Muang’s orders and for my own safety. I asked to see the Chao Muang, but he was not available, and Minister Rattamontrii came in his place. I explained that it was necessary for me to return to England to get proper treatment. He understood, but emphasised that he disobeyed the Chao Muang at his peril. He reassured me that he would get permission for me to leave before the end of the day.

12 July, 1905 - about 9 pm

There has been no word from Minister Rattamontrii. I sent for Dau, but was told she could not come until late because she was dancing. I was tempted to go and watch, but thought the better of it - discretion being the better part of valour!

Dr Van Helsing’s Ethnological Notebook - Marginal note dated, 12 July, 1905, about 9 pm

I was stopped by a man on horseback who asked me in broken English if I was Dr Van Helsing. Upon expressing my astonishment that he should recognise me, he laughed, and said there were not many Farangset on the mountain pass to Chiang Mai, and that it was worth asking as it could save him a journey of hundreds of miles. He gave me another letter from Jonathan, and I have just finished perusing it. I could tell at once from his unsteady handwriting that something was wrong, and as I read the letter for the second time, a theory began to form in my mind. If he had described the marks correctly, they are indeed those of a vampire - but this is not Transylvania! The Siamese do not bury their dead - they cremate them (as described on page 97 of this Notebook) - so there are no ‘undead’ to rise from the grave! Certain other details remind me of my ethnological notes on Siamese religious and supernatural beliefs (page 153 is particularly relevant) and led me to the formulation of my theory. I cannot be certain - but if I am right, he is in grave danger. I will take some quick refreshment now, re-read page 153, and then ride through the night. God grant that I get there in time!

12 July, 1905 - My Room in the Chao Muang’s Palace - about 1 am

I awoke with a start - someone was in my room! - but it was only Dau. I had fallen asleep while waiting for her, and her entrance had disturbed me. She looked wonderful! She was in her full dancing costume, her naked breasts still heaving from her last dance. “I sorry I late,” she said, “dancing just finish. I change now.”
“No,” I said, “Don’t change yet. Dance for me.”
There is an ecstasy of the eye that is almost as intense as the ecstasy of consummation, and I felt it then. She was like a willow tree in the wind, bending from her torso to the tips of her fingers at impossible angles, yet always graceful. Her body writhed as though in the throes of orgasm, yet her head was always straight, as though she balanced that conical golden crown on her head. And all the while, her eyes were locked with mine so that it seemed we were actually making love.
When the dance ended, she knelt before the bed, her head bowed, her hands making a wai, as if to say, “I am your slave. Do with me what you will!” Oh! how am I ever going to content myself with our cold English women after this!
She is changing now, and I am jotting down these notes while I have the chance. For a while, at least, my morbid fears are forgotten. Dau is here! My strength is recovered - enough at least to express my appreciation of her dance - and that I intend to do. When she comes from the antechamber in the glory of her full nakedness, I will make every symbolic gesture of that dance real! Then, if I have to die tomorrow, I will at least die happy!
