Before I loved you
I thought I was rich:
I had a job, a house, a car,
and lots of ‘stuff’:
iPod
SmartPhone
Netbook
HDTV
Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound
(I wanted an iPad next!)
but I didn’t feel fulfilled –
that was the hitch.
For you, a bamboo shack had to suffice;
only a mat to sleep on
in a room with 8 others:
no running water,
electricity,
toilet, doors or glazing,
not much meat,
mostly dried fish,
and at times not even enough rice –
that’s why your smile seemed so amazing.
You said, “I am a poor girl;
I have nothing.
but you are rich –
what do you see in me?
Am I just a plaything for your pleasure?”
“Oh no!” I said, “there’s riches
in your love!
I can’t explain…
I have a house,
a car,
money,
and a lot of stuff…
but it was me who was poor
until your poverty
showered me with unimaginable treasure!"
