Tales abound of people surviving
the powerful tsunami waves
by clinging to trees,
mainly coconut trees.
The coconut is called
'The Tree of Life'
in more ways than one.
From the roots to the leaves,
there is no part
of this wonderful palm
that is of no use to man.
A symbol of the tropics;
the coconut is planted mainly
for its fruit
while the other parts are
just by-products.
The naturally sweet juice and meat
of the young fruit make
a wonderful refreshment
while the coconut milk,
extracted from the flesh
of the mature coconut,
is an essential ingredient
in the preparation of a variety
of Thai curries and desserts.
