Isn't it odd
that the foreigners come
to lie down on the
beach near the water.
They heed no advice
but roast in the sun
and cry painfully later.
They're acting unwisely
each moment they can
to get some more colour
to even the tan
on the beach near the sea.
The locals are smart,
never seen on the beach
in the sunlight.
They show up much later
when the sunrays have gone.
They play in the water
while still fully dressed.
They're out to enjoy
the beach and the sea
but avoid like the plague
exposure to darken the skin;
it would lower their status,
might show where they're from
and they sure do resent it
because it might not be true.
