In ‘The Spell of the Yukon’, by Robert Service, the poet describes how men are attracted to the Yukon because of the gold, then fall in love with the country and the excitement of prospecting. In my adaptation, the Yukon = Thailand, cold = hot, gold = girls, and the fun of “finding” is same same.

Inspired by Byron’s Don Juan, this poem continues the adventures of the Bangkok Don Juan - ‘a fat and fifty-something sort of man’ named Jim. Book II describes what happens on his second trip to the Land of Smiles. In Canto I, Starfishing, Jim risks his rod in the shark-infested waters of Pattaya.
