Arthur comes back from the smelly, ramshackle toilet.

‘How was it? Simon asks as they re-board the bus.

‘Surprisingly firm.’

‘I mean the toilet.’
Damn, Chuck. These stories of yours get better and better. I liked this one a lot. Always an enjoyable and amusing read. More please, whenever you get the chance and inclination. For more from Mr. Chuckwoww go to www.planetwriters.com where he has some really nice stories that are not Thailand related.
Just notes:

Of course the anthropological opening intrigues and I am sorry you don’t take it further. Rather it is betrayed by the archness of insinuating deceit to Duan. Around here at least it would be more storyworthy to portray an honest thai woman I often think.

Arthurs sartorial pragamatism says a lot about him and thats economy! I like Simon’s knowingness too. Narrativewise it opens up space and facet in fascinating ways.

The subsequent literaryness and games is elitest fun. You wear your erudition lightly

The jokes/ quiz are interspersed with nice Thai journey images

‘Wow, it is getting delicate as the so called ‘real’ characters are getting infiltrated and changed by the ‘imagined’ characters of their own creation.’”

Double wow. This postmodern locution has me beat or more exactly I think I know what you are trying to say but don’t understand what you have said (smiley)

I suppose the scatological is intentionally vulgar but I just don’t see what it is doing here. But how would you then have worked Becket in? Waiting for the bus perhaps?

Barth is a dreadful pun!

The ending is good. Omnisience, omnipresence, omnibus, post post modern, whatever. Nice about Tuscany too

I used to live there. Will again
Thanks for the comments guys . Very encouraging.
Icarus…I’ve been working on possible endings to a novel. Duan and Arthur have a long history and I only hinted at it here. (See ‘Reincarnation’ for the cremation of Duan’s mother)

This stuff can be a lot of fun to write. Basically I just liked the idea of two guys on a bus in Northern Thailand making obscure literary references. That quote from Durrell fitted perfectly. Ditto ‘Krapp’s Last Tape’ worked for Arthur’s toilet visit. Yes, ‘Barth’ is an excruciatingly horrible pun...I share Mr. B’s post-modern sense of humour if not his literary talent.

Thanks again.

Ok, cool; now we need some clever person to do 'two Thais on a bus in northern England making obscure Thai references'.
